Positive Ageing Week

30 September 2024

Positive Ageing Week (30th September – 6th October), is a global initiative which aims to celebrate the contributions of older people and promote a more inclusive society.

This year Herefordshire Council are taking part in a collaborative campaign with Active Herefordshire and Worcestershire, and Worcestershire County Council with the aim of raising awareness about the benefits of staying active later in life.

Our muscles naturally get weaker as we age. This means that muscle strengthening activity is the most important type of exercise to do as we get older in order to keep our muscles strong and healthy. The Chief Medical Officer recommends that muscle strengthening should be done at least 2 days a week.

Muscle strengthening activities involve using your body weight or working against a resistance.

For ideas of different strengthening activities you can do and videos to follow please see the NHS website - How to improve your strength and flexibility - NHS (www.nhs.uk)

"These sessions are saving my life. If I'm home, I'm blank to the world. This gives me a chance to socialise."

Feel Good for Life is a weekly programme supporting people affected by dementia, loneliness & depression, & their carers, to be physically active & reduce feelings of social isolation. Each session includes an hour of low-impact physical activity & an hour of socialising, entertainment, information, or interactive workshops.

These sessions are currently running every Thursday at Hereford Leisure Centre and will be launching at Leominster leisure centre from the 15th October. For more information on this please visit - FEEL GOOD FOR LIFE (haloleisure.org.uk)
